Sleep Paralysis

Temporal Novice
I have had two experiences with sleep paralysis. One of which was very frightening. This experience happened when I was around 12 years old. I had fallen asleep on the couch with the TV on. I woke up I would guess around 2am and could not move my body. I could see the TV from the position I was in and it had gone to static (I guess the station had shut down for the night), but there were voices coming from it. They were speaking a language I had never heard before, if I had to guess, I would say it sounded like a cross between chinese and latin. There sounded to be more than 3 different voices, and they were speaking in what I would describe as a loud whisper. I did not feel like there was a presence in the room, but I did feel like there was a presence IN the TV. After lying there in terror for what seemed like 5 minutes (but was probably closer to 2 minutes), I felt the only thing I could do was close my eyes. I immediately fell back to sleep. When I woke up a couple hours later, the TV was still static, but there were no voices coming from it. I turned it off, thought about my experience, and drifted back to sleep.
In the past I have told people about my experience, and they have told me I was dreaming. I KNOW FOR SURE I was not dreaming. It was not until I started dating my now husband that I actually found someone else with a similar experience. He though, instead of hearing the voices, felt an overwhelming evil presence in the room that he, to this day, believes was a demon, or lucifer himself.
These are my questions for you: Has anyone else had a similar experience? What do you think it is? What do you think causes it?

Since I was 10 years old I have had these similar experiences. I would be at the stage of just falling asleep when I would sense a presence in the room, I would not be able to move or speak, I would try but it always is very tough for me. The feeling is very scary and I would only be able to look around in the room I always see one or two figures standing at the foot of my bed. This happened one night when I heard my father go into the restroom which was next to my bedroom, I knew it was him because I heard his cough. I then tried to fall asleep, when I felt this presence. I seen a figure at the foot of the bed and I tried to scream, fighting the force that was in the room I finally was able to scream and it must have been about 15 sec of me yelling then soon after that my father finally heard me, I was very scared and he said he came as soon as he heard the scream. Now I had been screaming for him for a while and I still dont understand why he did not hear me right away. It was as if all sound was filtered around me while this was happening. I am 27 now and still experience this I have lived in three states and now I live alone and it continues.

The feeling is just as I start to fall asleep when I sense a presence in the room then I know it is happening again, my body feels like a flag blowing in the wind (is the best way to describe it). I feel like my soul is being taken and I have to fight for it. I have talked to many people about it and still I get no answers, some say I need to be more grounded "whatever that means" some say I have a gift, "but cannot tell me what it is? I still search for answers everyday or every chance I get...Does anyone know why this happens? /ttiforum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

What you could be experiencing is the awareness of your astral body. Your conscious self is still integrated within your physical body, however, your astral body is waiting and ready to go.
Some of the sensations you describe are very similar to what others have felt when shifting from one body to the other.
Some further study of astral travelling may produce some answers to these events.

Thank you .....

I know that all this time this has been happening I have been fighting to stay in my body. If I choose to just go what could be the outcome? This is what frightens me. Can you explain? /ttiforum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Fear is a normal response to the unknown. Grounding yourself is merely a term for staying focused in the here and now. After shifting through many realms, I need to "ground" myself in this World. I take long walks, surrounded by nature, and try to actually engage in an activity that requires me to touch and feel the Earth, as in gardening.

To diminish the fear, you must increase your confidence of security. Learn some prayers to Angels for protection.( i.e.,ArchAngel Michael). You might even try calling him next time it happens. Learn how to focus your entire being into these prayers, and surround yourself with protective eminations of golden-white energy, unpenetrable by any outside influences.

When you feel confident in your protection, then allow the seperation to take place. Perhaps have a friend with you to wake you up at intervals to provide a security blanket ( so to speak ).

There is a web site similar to this one that discusses Astral travelling. Perhaps you should post the question to them as well.

Yeah, what he said. It's a very common, widley known event that is well understood. I've not looked into it for a few years but, if memory serves, the cause is simply to do with the way that the brain operates.

As we fall asleep, the brain blocks certain signals to the body so that, for example, when we dream that we are walking our legs don't actually make the motions. In rare instances, especially when we are falling asleep, or just waking, this can happen before we lose consiousness or remain for a time after we regain consiousness. And it's that simple.

It's happened to me, too and it is disconcerting. However, as your mind is partically consious, you are in control. If you are armed with the knowledge of what Sleep Paralysis actually is, then you should be able to overcome any fear you may have, in the same way that if you realise that you're having a nightmare it is no longer scary (well, I'm never scared by my nightmares these days in any case. They're too much fun).

This doesn't explain the presence of another person(s) or entity in the room. I too have had the same thing occur and as I learned more regarding astral travelling it made sense, as many techiques involve the sensing of the astral body just before shifting ones awareness from one body to the other.

I have had dreams where I actually got up and moved around. One in particular I got up out of the bed, got dressed, opened the locked bedroom door, ran around furniture, unchained and unbolted the front door, and opened the front door, and spoke to my girlfriend. ( as was occuring in the dream ) and woke up standing in the open doorway looking at my nervous girlfriend, who was wondering what I was doing. The only difference in the dream and reality was that in the dream there was an earthquake and I was running around looking for her to warn her. I found her coming up the walkway to the front door and was attempting to tell her about the earthquake as I was still experiencing the dream.

This also provided me with some crucial information as to the dynamics of the dream state. My mind was completely without the maturity of reason. I only could describe the earthquake in a very primitive way..I was telling the girl ..." It's A Mover!!!"

This was the only description that the subconscious was able to connect to what it was experiencing. The interesting aspect of that dream was that my logical facilities were observing what the subconscious was doing. I was able to review the entire dream later and make comparisons between the two perceptions in action with a single event.

I've had sleep paralysis and at one time, had to fight to get out of it.

Also had visitors at night, that did something along medical lines to me, but was held in a paralysis lock and only could free my left hand, which grabbed onto something that was not part of the room I was in.

According to your descriptions, igbalgomar, it sounds as if you were asleep during these occurences; you mentioned waking up, or trying to wake yourself up. This is quite different from my experiences as I was wide awake and did not feel the least bit sleepy. I never "woke up" from the experience, in fact, I went to sleep to escape it. I too have many experiences with interactive, lucid dreams, but these experiences I had with sleep paralysis were not dreams.
I do thank you for posting the links, the sites were quite interesting.

The theory of the self-protective sleep hormones (to protect one from injuring one's self during the dream state) does sound like the most scientifically plausible explanation. But as someone else mentioned, it does not explain the voices I was hearing. As far as astral projection, I do not know much about it and therefore need to do some research before forming an opinion. However, I did feel firmly seated in my body as opposed to a feeling of separation.

I went through this while i was practicing KI energy before i went to sleep, i used up to much energy and couldn't move. MY theory on this subject is that when one is sleeping if we have a frightening enough dream we start to realese energy to help us fight. Once you realese too much energy you are unable to move anymore, which happened in my situation. I base this on that fact that what happens in our dreams, if real enough happens to our physcial bodies, i belive most of the males here have had situations with this theory?

Nothing similar to your experiences, but I have felt strange bodily sensations of falling in dreams or laying on a couch watching TV. Could that have anything similar to do with this or is it something else?

...strange bodily sensations of falling in dreams ...

If you were to research 2012, this may bring some information you are seeking. The esoteric energy is building up and bringing changes. The sensitive individuals are beginning to experience many unusual events.
Your inner self is moving, your spirit restless within. Astral Travelling may hold some answers to your questions. There is a threaded forum on the web that has its focus on Astral Travelling and the experiences of others.

I have had occurrences of sleep paralysis over the last 20 years.

The most terrifying instance was the first time I experienced it.
I was dreaming that I was in a bar somewhere having a beer with some people and talking when all of a sudden everything froze, nothing was moving, even the clock on the wall was stopped.
In my mind I thought that this was something that happened all the time but I was supposed to be frozen as well. I felt terrified and decided to act like I was frozen.
From the corner of my eye I saw a short being wearing a black cape come into the bar. He began to slowly walk by each person. I knew he was looking for the person who was not in suspended animation. I remained as still as a mannequin and he slowly walked past me.
Then all of a sudden he turned around and walked back to me and leaned in close to my face and began to smile. I was never so frightened in my life and I tried to yell but I couldn't, I realized that I was dreaming but I couldn't move, no matter how hard I tried. I began trying to scream and after a few minutes I guess I managed to make some sound in the real world and my wife woke up and shook me. I immediately became fully awake and could move.

I have had other experiences similar to this but I now know that I am in-between dream and fully awake, so I know to just keep trying to make a noise until my wife touches me and I will snap out of it.

My thoughts as to why people who experience sleep paralysis usually have this feeling of an evil being or aliens or demons is that your conscious mind is trying to bring you out of the dream state but can't quite do it. As a natural reaction to being constrained or controlled your mind will send chemicals to stimulate your body into moving. The unconscious part of your mind responds to this by intensifying your fear and dreams express your emotions in pictures so your mind produces a picture of something that frightens you.

I hadn`t visited this site for over a month, and to my great surprise, when I came back today, I found that among the most recent posts, Sleep Paralysis was one of them....!!!!

I had 2 , just last night....

I`ve had some SP experiences in the past, very few and far between, but last night`s were exceptionally intense and real.

I had gone to bed a lot earlier than usual, feeling extremely tired.
After a couple of hours, I was `woken` up by this intense throbbing and both high and low pitched sounds, for which the closest adjective I can find right now is `magnetic`...it wasn`t a real sound, nor a melody, nor a tune, it was this magnetic `pulse` which was reverberating throughout my body and envelopping it all.

At the same time, I felt this heavy pressure on my back, as if someone or something was trying to prevent me from moving any further... I knew I had to react. But I was paralysed....Having had a similar immobilizing experience before (but without the sounds) I kept telling myself - Sarah, move, move, move,....I was applying all the energy I could to my hands and neck and voice until finally I snapped out of it, and was able to move freely.

I wasnt as scared as I should have been, since it wasnt my first experience, but I was left with a dumb pain on my back, and I could still feel the pressure on it.
I went back to sleep with the lights on and lying on my back instead of my front.

I woke up again after a couple of hours. Feeling more confident and less scared, I decided to challenge this previous paralysis and go back to sleep exposing my back....again, after a couple of minutes, the `noises` came back, ringing and echoing in my ears....but, I was still `awake` - I wasnt paralysed - I quickly sat up, turned both the lights and the TV on and went back to sleep....on my back!!!!

Don`t know what will happen tonight!!! What would have happened if I had let those sounds and those pressures on my back take control of me? What if I hadn`t reacted?

Sarah,

If you hadn't of reacted, you would have at some point fallen back into deep sleep and would no longer be experiencing sleep paralysis.

I remember the first time i got it. I was in France on holiday with my family. They went into a supermarket. I fell asleep on the back seat of the car. The next thing i knew was that i was conciously perceptive, but i could move. I thought i had sun-stroke back in those days - i was about 15/16 years old (this was about 5 years ago). Never heard of sleep paralysis. Later on i read something which mentioned sleep paralysis and realised that was what i was experiencing. I usually don't feel a presence. But i get exactly the same thing with the whole pulsing magnet feeling in the body And very weird pulsing static whispery noise. Sometimes i get really discomforting throbbing pains in my mouth also pressure pains in my chest.

These days i usually know about 1 - 2 seconds or so before it occurs that its going to happen - i feel myself start to fall into it. At this point i mentally focus all my energy on waking up fully. It happens regularly to me nowadays. The best way to get out of it is not to move your upper torso or legs - it just won't happen. Try moving your toes, this should be possible and once you move them, you'll start a chain. You'll become aware of movement in the lower and then upper parts of the leg, then the torso - you can snap yourself back out of it at this point.

I find the degree of concious awareness dictates how much success you get with this. If you have that 'zombie' mentality and have woken up un the later stages of deep sleep then you probably won't have the mental focus to do it. For the lighter stages of deeps sleep, this should work.

I also take comfort in this fact - at least i wake up in sleep paralysis - rather than going to sleep without it!!

You should hear some of the stories of people that go to sleep where sleep paralysis fails!! That much much more worrying. Hope this helps,

Kind regards,
Olly

The presence that you feel are parts in your brain which are sensitive to magnetic force. As a magnetic field increases around your brain, these knobs, on the left and right side of your brain can react, contract, and you 'feel a presence'. This is only your bodies naturall paranoia, when i was a kid, my dad bought me a alarm clock i used to sleep with. The first night was the scariest night of my life, i felt so paranoid, i could feel something around me in the room, and i always saw a ghost walking down the hallway. It happened every night for a month, than my dad bought a doctor into my room, he studied the stuff, he asked me questions, than he took the alarm clock and that night i slept fine. It was because the alarm clock was altering the magnetic field around my brain, thus these knobs were contracting and i felt like paranoid and caused hallucinations...

You guys all talk [censored], 'astral bodies' wtf. Give me a break.

i had sp for the first time around a week ago...i'll have to explain what has been happeing before it though.

ive always been very close to something spiritual ( god..angels..spirits..what ever you want to call them ) my entire life or as long as i can remember..we talk very frequintly and help each other out in anyway we can. anytime i decide to talk to them or they to me ive always felt this light in the top of my field of view when i close my eyes, its very real and i know whats going on, anyways recently i know ive pissed who ever it is off and they will not forgive me for what i asked for. for the past week my minds been flooded with very very scary images of me stabbing myself or just really bad things happening to people i care about or this constant feeling something evil or something with bad intentions is following me in every room i enter.. even when i close my eyes to talk the light is gone and im very scared that someone isnt comming back. ive never been afraid of anything because i always knew itd be ok...but lately i just dont know.
anyways my sp happend as i said a few night back while i was lying on my face in bed with the lights off. as i was JUST falling asleep i felt something in the room and it grabbed my hand which was hanging off the edge of the bed very very tight..i tried to open my eyes but they wouldnt let me for a few seconds..the whatever it was then let go of my hand and leaped on my back crushing me into the bed..i tried to scream but it put its hands around my neck and wouldnt let me scream..i eventually screamed so hard i thought my heart would burst then it just stopped. i was VERY awake during this entire experience. ive always been able to control my dreams no matter what the situation.
anyways...has anyone else felt like something is very very mad at you?

Rho,

The place between wakefullness and sleep is where those who practice astral projection (or soul travel) often times start their jouneys. It is the easiest place, since the mechanisms are already in place there. Advanced travellers do it from a meditative-like state which is more difficult to acheive, but once accomplished makes for a longer "session" with more control.

I will not go into the specifics here, because those who take the time to study, practice and learn the technique are more prepared to face the obstacles that they will encounter. From a religious (OT) standpoint we are warned that we should not face the entities that inhabit these planes without the "full armor of God" or in non-theological terms - "you better have your sh*t together" /ttiforum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What you are experiencing Rho, is the initial entry to this plane via the mechanism I outlined above, and there are beings who lurk at the threshold whose only task is to terrorize newcomers (hoping to keep them from ever venturing further) or if they are strong, they will try to steal your soul or use the portal that you've opened to enter your body - you must be prepared so that you can defend yourself. They are no match for a human soul - it is one of the most powerful forces in the universe - that is why it is such a prize for them, but you must have protection.

Simply ask your guides for the power to defend yourself and your soul from these entities and it will be granted if the request is pure and not for self-enrichment. Your reasons should be for the benefit of mandkind and the universe as a whole. After all, it is not like asking for the lottery numbers. Remember every good warrior soul will be needed in the battles to come and you have the responsibility to make yours as strong as possible.

Peace.

i always had " the full armor of god" up until rescently..im not kidding when i say something is very very pissed off at me..
if something is out to get a piece of me its comming all out..
i know whats eating me spiritually but im having a real hard time stopping the thoughts..and i think ive been left on my own this time to stop them since they were stopped before when i asked. i let them back into my life and now im getting the [censored] kicked out of me for it....
its not pleasent.

wish me luck
